Many factors contribute to achieving long-term sobriety. The following factors are associated with better abstinence rates following detoxification, but do not in of themselves, guarantee abstinence:

  • Good overall physical health
  • Little or no history of major psychiatric illness, or history of severe personality disorders
  • Absence of other substance use such as alcohol, marijuana, hashish, cocaine, crack, sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, hallucinogens, or Club Drugs (e.g., Ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol, ketamine or methamphetamine)
  • Strong social supports such as a spouse, partner, children, siblings, relatives and close friends
  • Spouse or partner that is substance free
  • Steady employment
  • Education
  • Financially stable
  • No criminal history or minimal criminal history
  • Recent history of substance dependence
  • Willingness to participate in an aftercare treatment facility or program
  • Motivation and commitment to a substance-free lifestyle
  • No history of significant chronic pain
