Many factors contribute to achieving long-term sobriety. The following factors are associated with better abstinence rates following detoxification, but do not in of themselves, guarantee abstinence:
- Good overall physical health
- Little or no history of major psychiatric illness, or history of severe personality disorders
- Absence of other substance use such as alcohol, marijuana, hashish, cocaine, crack, sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, hallucinogens, or Club Drugs (e.g., Ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol, ketamine or methamphetamine)
- Strong social supports such as a spouse, partner, children, siblings, relatives and close friends
- Spouse or partner that is substance free
- Steady employment
- Education
- Financially stable
- No criminal history or minimal criminal history
- Recent history of substance dependence
- Willingness to participate in an aftercare treatment facility or program
- Motivation and commitment to a substance-free lifestyle
- No history of significant chronic pain
